Raised by a single teen mother, Winfrey had been born into poverty in the city of Milwaukee. Incidentally, she had been named after the Biblical character Orpah but the hard to pronounce name was soon to be changed into Oprah and that is how it has stuck for the rest of her life.
Oprah had her special talents as a speaker and as a gifted intellectual mind, she was taught to read and write as well instilled a love of God and religion very early in life by her grandmother. When admitted to school Oprah because of her intelligence was often skipped ahead in classes.

Oprah continued to perform very well in school but as she hit her teenage years, her life became mired with all sorts of pitfalls. She had to move multiple times between her father’s place in Tennessee and her mother’s place. She spent a gruesome 4 years from 9-13 where she had faced sexual assault multiple times from her uncle, cousin, a family friend as well as her mother’s boyfriend.
In fact, all of this forced her to run away from home at the tender age of 13 but the death of her baby boy at just 2 weeks made her feel like she had a new lease on life and she decided to move to Nashville where she stayed with her father and attended the Nashville High School.

She excelled at it and it opened the doors for her to win the grand prize in a state wide competition that led to her getting a scholarship at Tennessee State University where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts.
Fresh out of college, she was offered the job at CBS as a co-anchor. But her desire to move out of Tennesse meant that she left for a reporting job in Baltimore.
